$8000 Tax Credit for Military

$8000 Tax Credit Still An Option For Some Military Personnel

Are you disappointed that you missed out on that $8000 First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit?  Are you or your spouse active duty military?  Don't beat yourself up... because you still might qualify!

Acknowledging the unique circumstances of most military families, Congress made a few exceptions that apply to the $8000 tax credit for first-time home buyers and the $6500 tax credit for repeat home buyers.

Tax Credit Deadline Extension

  • A member of the uniformed services of the U.S. Military who experienced any period of extended duty outside of the United States for at least 90 days during the period beginning after December 31, 2008 and ending before May 2, 2010 may be eligible for an extension of deadlines.  For these home buyers, the tax credit still applies to sales that are under contract prior to April 30,2011 and closed by June 30, 2011.
  • A person who is forced to return to the U.S. for medical reasons before completing an assignment of at least 90 days of qualified official extended duty outside of the United States may qualify for the one-year extension.

What does this mean for you?

If you, or your spouse, was deployed or outside of the United States for more than 90 days in between December 31, 2008 and May 1, 2010, you may still qualify for the $8000 First-time Home Buyer's Tax Credit.  However, you must have a home Under Contract by April 30, 2011, which gives you two and a half months left to shop for your dream home!  With so many great homes on the market for sale, you don't want to let this great oppurtunity pass you by!
